Walter W. ‘Wally’ Gibbons – Elizabeth Township

 

Walter W. “Wally” Gibbons, 79, of Elizabeth Township, went to his heavenly home on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2018. He was born in Mc-Keesport on May 31, 1938, son of the late Walter and Helen Winkler Gibbons. He was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church, where he served many positions. He was also a member of the Pennsylvania Athletic Directors Association, the Elizabeth Forward Alumni and Friends Association and the Elizabeth Township Seniors. Wally was a teacher, head basketball coach, head track coach and was athletic director at Elizabeth Forward High School. He retired after 33 years of service. He taught world cultures, history, English, science and math. He was a graduate of McKeesport High School and Clemson University, which he attended on a basketball scholarship. He also served on the Elizabeth Forward School Board. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Darla Ruth Golz Gibbons; daughters, Debra Ruth Gibbons and her lifetime partner Donald R. Short of Pleasant Hills, and Lynn Renée and her husband Frank Przywarty of New Castle; grandson, Nicholas Gibbons Przywarty; sister-in-law, Bernice and her husband Bill Vaughn of McKeesport; a niece, Nancy and her husband, Tom Andrejko; nephew, David and his wife, Marianne Vaughn; great-nieces and great-nephews and many special cousins and friends. Family and friends are welcome from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, at GILBERT FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY INC., 6028 Smithfield St., Boston, Elizabeth Township, 412-751-5000, Drew J. Gilbert, director. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, at Elizabeth Baptist Church. (Everyone please meet at the church). Interment will follow in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Elizabeth Township. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Elizabeth Baptist Church at 735 Bunola Road, Elizabeth PA 15037.
