A man who suffered “extensive injuries” was taken to Monongahela Valley Hospital Thursday night after crashing his SUV into an unoccupied apartment building in Charleroi, according to Charleroi fire Chief Robert Whiten Jr.

Charleroi firefighters, police officers and a public works crew were on scene at the apartment building at the intersection of Eighth Street and Lincoln Avenue for several hours following the crash.

The driver of the silver Dodge Journey SUV, whose name and age were not revealed by first responders, “may have suffered a medical emergency” prior to the crash, Whiten said, adding that emergency medical responders initially requested the assistance of a medical helicopter “but decided to take (the driver) to Mon Valley Hospital” via ambulance.

The chief said a passenger in the car, who was only identified as the driver’s son, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Whiten said the owners of the building, whose names weren’t given, have recently been working to fix up the property.
