Rostraver Township police participated in a statewide aggressive driving detail on Wednesday.
In partnership with PennDOT and state police, the seven-week long initiative began July 9 and will run through Aug. 26 – the third wave of enforcement.
The Pennsylvania Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project is a statewide initiative that utilizes crash data to identify aggressive driving locations.
More than 230 municipal police agencies and 17 state police troops are participating in the effort.
Locally, in Region 6, which comprises communities in Washington, Westmoreland, Fayette and Allegheny counties, there were 50 local departments participating.
The crackdown is targeting speeding, tailgating, disobeying traffic signals, work zone safety and the Steer Clear Law.
In southwestern Pa., officers have issued 921 citations so far.
Agencies are focusing on roadways known to have a high number of aggressive driving crashes, including those in work zones.
The second 2017-18 Aggressive Driving Wave began March 19 and ended April 29.
There were 21,711 enforcement contacts and 19,860 citations/arrests during the second wave of enforcement, including 11,858 speeding related citations written; representing 60 percent of all citations. Traffic Control Signals/Signs was second highest with 1,440 citations and then Obedience to Traffic Control Devices with 1,051 citations.
