Editorial: Vatican statement falls far short

The Vatican issued a strongly worded statement yesterday denouncing terrible abuse by priests that was detailed in a Pennsylvania grand jury report made public this week.

While calling the abuse “criminally and morally reprehensible” and expressing “shame and sorrow” for the actions of the priests, the Vatican statement is more significant for what it doesn’t contain.
