A University of Pittsburgh Medical Center representative made a presentation to the Elizabeth Forward School Board Wednesday night regarding the potential negative effects of vaping.
David Suba, a UPMC clinical educator, said vaping technology is coming on strong and isn’t going away.
Vaping deals with inhaling and exhaling vapors produced by an electronic cigarette or a similar device.
“The regular cigarette market right now, for the combustable cigarettes, is about a $93 billion industry,” Suba said, adding there are about 75-plus vaping stores in Allegheny County that mainly sell the liquids for the electronic cigarettes. “Ten years ago, the big companies like Phillip Morris and R.J. Reynolds would have laughed at vaping, they thought it was a joke. They’re not laughing anymore. If you go on their websites and look, they’re switching over and right now it’s commanding about $20 billion.”
