Kim Leasure is a puzzler, she likes to figure things out and solve problems.
Her role as a chemistry teacher at Ringgold High School gives her a chance to work through various problems with students who are really into the subject.
This year, she was recognized for her work by the Air Force Association, which annually recognizes teachers who specialize in STEM education — science, technology, engineering and math.
She won the AFA teacher of the year award at the local Mon Valley level of the AFA and moved on to the state-wide competition, and won at that level as well.
Leasure’s former principal Greg Locy nominated her for the award, which surprised her as she has no ties to the Air Force.
The AFA’s mission is to promote a dominate U.S. Air Force and to honor Airmen and Air Force Heritage. It works to educate the public about the critical need for unmatched aerospace power and a technically superior workforce, to advocate for STEM education and to support local Air Force families.
“I was completely humbled and honored to receive an award at the state level,” Leasure said. “It was a really nice award. It was a monetary award and some recognition.”
