McKeesport Mayor Michael Cherepko fought back tears at Wednesday’s council meeting as he announced police Chief Bryan J. Washowich will be retiring next month.
“He just came to me not too long ago and said ‘I think it’s time to retire,’” Cherepko said. “We are sad to see Chief Washowich go. He is a true McKeesport Tiger with that iconic McKeesport pride, and he has served the city that he loves well.”
Washowich has worked for the department for the past 25 years. He will retire Feb. 1, the exact date of his eight-year anniversary of being named chief.
Following the regular meeting, Cherepko said the city is eager to fill the chief position from within the department’s current staff and plans to promote Assistant Chief Adam Alfer to head the chief position.
The mayor said that once Alfer is officially installed as chief, he and Cherepko will work together to determine who the next assistant chief will be.
