Monessen School Board may vote next week to adopt the state Act 1 resolution for the fiscal year 2019-20.
Adopted in 2006, Act 1 requires school districts to seek voter approval for tax increases greater than the index, the state’s determinant for property tax increases justified by wage inflation. School districts’ Act 1 indexes are calculated separately for each fiscal year.
“Basically, what it means is that we’re not going to increase taxes to a level set by the inflation index unless a tax increase is approved by the voters in a referendum,” board president Roberta Bergstedt said during a work session Tuesday.
