After hearing President Donald Trump’s first national address from the White House Oval Office Tuesday, Mon Valley-based state and federal legislators have mixed feelings about the ongoing federal government shutdown and border wall debate.
In his speech, Trump again linked illegal immigration along the southern border with drugs and violent crime as he urged Democrats to fund his proposed $5 billion border wall.
Giving no indication he was softening his stance that the partial government shutdown would continue without money for the wall, Trump argued that it was necessary to reverse what he called a security and humanitarian “crisis.”
Now in its third week, the shutdown has left hundreds of thousands of federal workers without pay.
Republicans at the state and national level have mixed feelings about the subject, while Valley-based Democrats are speaking out against the shutdown and blaming it on the president.
U.S. Rep. Guy Reschenthaler, R- Peters Township, blames the Democrats.
