Monessen council unanimously approved a resolution Thursday stripping Mayor Matt Shorraw of the powers of his office until he attends a council meeting.
Councilman Anthony Orzechowski was named acting mayor, immediately assuming all of Shorraw’s duties in his absence.
The resolution declares that Shorraw, who has missed 22 consecutive meetings since May 10, and Councilman Gil Coles, who has attended one meeting since February, abandoned their offices.
It states that neither Shorraw nor Coles has participated in day-to-day city business, and as a result, have been detrimental to the city’s progress, leaving council with “a disorganized and incomplete governing body.”
