Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald has announced a series of grants aimed at making sure air in the county remains clean.
Fitzgerald announced this week that the county Health Department has awarded $300,000 in grants from the Clean Air Fund to support seven air quality projects.
Since 2015, more than $4 million has been awarded from the fund to advocacy agencies and community-based organizations for projects focused on pollution prevention activities and air quality education efforts.
The grant announcement comes on the heels of a health department recommendation released Wednesday morning, which stated that Mon Valley residents— especially those with asthma, bronchitis or emphysema, as well as children and the elderly — should limit outdoor activities until further notice. The alert was prompted by a Christmas Eve fire at U.S. Steel’s Clairton Coke Works that damaged two gas dispatcher stations and has resulted in several exceedances of the federal standards for hourly SO2 (sulfur dioxide) emissions.
