Pennsylvania State Police are warning residents to be alert for scams that may attempt to take advantage of the current federal government shutdown.
These scams may appear as email solicitations, email links or attachments, phone solicitations or internet pop-up pages, according to a state police community awareness bulletin.
The federal government’s partial shutdown has become the longest in American history. Today marks the 26th day of the impasse. The shutdown has caused 800,000 federal workers to either work without pay, or go on unpaid leave. It has additionally caused several government agencies to close or operate at minimal capacity.
State police say the Federal Trade Commission customer complaint system is non-operational due to the shutdown, leaving a gap between victim reporting and consumer alerts.
