Monessen plant’s meeting sparsely attended

Only three Mid-Mon Valley residents attended an ArcelorMittal Monessen community meeting Thursday, and two of them work at the coke plant.
ArcelorMittal division manager Randy Shelton Sr. said the biannual meetings, which are held at Monessen High School, are meant to inform area residents about steps the coke plant has taken since last year to meet Environmental Protection Agency and state Department of Environmental Protection standards.
The meetings are as a result of a February 2018 consent decree issued to ArcelorMittal by the DEP after Penn Environment filed a federal lawsuit against the international company in October 2015, alleging it had been repeatedly violating limits on air pollution since the plant was restarted in 2014.
The settlement also forced the company to create a citizen complaint hotline (1-844-461-1044) for area residents to voice concerns and file complaints directly with ArcelorMittal. Shelton said the hotline, which was established last year, has never received a complaint call from a resident.
