On Monday people across the nation, including residents of the Mon Valley, will come together for events to commemorating the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Born Jan. 15, 1928, King was a Baptist minister and social activist who led the civil rights movement from the mid-1950s until he was assassinated April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tenn.
First observed nationally in 1986, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed on the third Monday of January.
During the less than 13 years of King Jr.’s leadership of the civil rights movement, African-Americans achieved more progress toward racial equality than the previous 350 years had produced, according to The King Center.
