Valley Oldies: Former Vulcans savored reunions of ‘orneriest’ gang

It’s not unusual for athletes of the past to get together to relive their glory days at California University of Pennsylvania.
Myriad special events for the former Vulcans are coordinated by the ever-efficient Cal U Alumni Association as well as by the individual teams for whom they played. There is no shortage of opportunities for those who wore the Red and Black and helped write the university’s storied sports history to journey down Memory Lane.
That was the idea behind a unique reunion that began on May 17, 1952, and ran for more than 20 years. It involved athletes of the mid-1920s who toiled for what was then known as California Normal School, which offered a two-year preparatory course for students pursuing careers as teachers. The school evolved into California State Teachers College in 1928, California State College in 1959 and California University of Pennsylvania in 1983.
