Editorial: Fitting tribute to a devoted firefighter
A DAY AFTER BURYING one of their own, local firefighters were back to work early Tuesday morning battling a major three-house fire in Donora.
Hundreds of firefighters representing at least 50 regional departments attended the funeral service Monday for beloved Carroll Township fire Chief Rob “Chief 63” Greenlee, who died Jan. 15 at his home at age 65.
Donning their dress uniforms and arriving in their fire trucks and other department vehicles, firefighters and other first responders attended Greenlee’s funeral service at Ringgold High School. The school was used to accommodate the hundreds of mourners who gathered to celebrate the life of a fallen comrade. More than 75 fire, police and ambulance vehicles joined a procession through Monongahela, Donora and Carroll Township.
It was a fitting tribute to a man described as a hero by those who worked alongside him. Greenlee had been an emergency responder in many capacities in Washington County since 1972, when he joined the fire service in Waynesburg as a teenager.
