“The house was filthy. It was uninhabitable. There was no heat and no water. It was absolutely deplorable conditions.”
That is how Liberty borough police Lt. Ray Johnson described an Orchard Street home where two brothers were living with three dogs and three cats.
Johnson said the brothers and all six animals were removed from the home, which is on the borough’s condemnation list, after officers received an anonymous complaint Tuesday afternoon that the home had been without water or heat for several months and there were several animals living inside in deplorable conditions.
Johnson said when officers arrived on scene, the two brothers, whom he did not identify, were “compliant” and “honest” with officers.
He said the brothers admitted they have not had heat or water in the home for the past five months because they couldn’t afford the bill, and that they have been using their oven to occasionally heat up the house.
Johnson said there was “feces all over the place and the home smelled like urine.”
“It was disgusting,” he said. “It was smelly and dirty.”
