Following Wednesday’s school board meeting, McKeesport Area Superintendent Dr. Mark Holtzman quashed rumors that the high school principal was forced to retire.
During the regular meeting, the board unanimously approved the retirement of longtime principal Tom Bauman. Holtzman said he is unsure exactly how many year’s Bauman has worked for MASD.
Bauman’s effective retirement date is June 30, but the board also unanimously approved a leave of absence for Bauman, which is effective retroactively from Dec. 12, 2018 to June 30.
Following the meeting, Holtzman shed light on rumors that have been circulating on McKeesport-themed community Facebook pages that Bauman was forced into retirement.
“It’s unfair and inaccurate to say that Mr. Bauman was forced to retire,” Holtzman said. “He decided to retire. It was his decision. It was simply a change in leadership.”
Holtzman said he has great respect for Bauman.
“He has done a lot of great things for this school district and the high school specifically,” Holtzman said. “Mr. Bauman is a great resource for some of our educators here and we hope he knows that he is welcome to visit the district and be a part of what we are doing at any time.”
