The Volunteer Fireman’s Association of Liberty Borough has announced several events aimed at raising money for the fire department, and one initiative it hopes will attract young, new members.
The VFD is encouraging seniors who attend South Allegheny High School and want to attain a secondary education to become firefighters in the borough.
Fire Chief Corey Derr said he hopes firefighters can talk some local seniors into joining so the department can sponsor the students as they attempt to get a full scholarship to Community College of Allegheny County through the FireVEST Scholarship Program.
In Allegheny County, volunteer firefighters protect more than 910,000 people, according to CCAC.
