Knowing the importance of Tuesday night’s Section 2-2A matchup against second-place Jeannette, Serra Catholic coach Justin Walther wanted his first-place Eagles to seize the moment and create separation atop the section standings.
The Eagles put that message into action as they outscored Jeannette, 37-3, in the middle quarters to claim a 68-37 home-court victory over the Jayhawks.
The win was Serra’s first over Jeannette since the teams began playing in the same section in 2012-13. Over the last six seasons, the Eagles (10-2, 6-0) had lost 12 straight meetings with the Jayhawks.
“We have a two-game lead and it’s pretty much like a three-game lead with the head to head,” Walther said. “We wanted to get the win.”
