Monessen council introduced a proposed ordinance Thursday that could subject elected officials to fines for missed meetings.
Solicitor Joseph R. Dalfonso drafted the first-of-its-kind ordinance, which if adopted would provide for “the assessment of reasonable fines for absences at regular or special meetings of council.”
Thursday marked Mayor Matt Shorraw’s 25th consecutive absence from council meetings, while Councilman Gil Coles has only attended one meeting since February 2018.
“Council felt like they wanted to hold everyone accountable — not just the mayor and Mr. Coles, but themselves, too,” Dalfonso said.
