U.S. Steel announced Friday that it will appeal an enforcement order issued this week against the company’s Mon Valley Works facilities by the Allegheny County Health Department.
The company argues that the order, which came as a result of continued permit violations involving daily sulfur dioxide emissions after a Dec. 24 fire occurred at the Clairton Coke Works, “would place the safety of our employees and local communities at risk.”
“Since the Dec. 24 fire at our Clairton facility, our focus has been on minimizing the impact to the environment and community while rebuilding safely and quickly,” U.S. Steel Spokeswoman Meghan M. Cox said in a prepared statement. “We initiated multiple actions to minimize environmental impacts, and we have welcomed and implemented multiple operational adjustments requested by the Allegheny County Health Department to help mitigate the environmental impact resulting from the fire-damaged equipment.
“Upon receipt of the order, we quickly reviewed its requirements to determine the steps necessary to comply.”
