Although none of its members were present, Versailles Mayor Jim Fleckenstein commended the borough’s volunteer fire department at Tuesday’s council meeting for a quick response time when they were dispatched to a Feb. 25 fire at Woody’s Italian Restaurant.
The fire department was dispatched at 12:41 a.m. to the well-known Versailles eating establishment, which has been in business for more than 50 years.
Fleckenstein said he was impressed because several members of Versailles VFD were on scene and actively fighting the fire in less than a minute. Crews had the fire extinguished in less than 20 minutes.
“I’d like to just commend (fire chief) Perry Gricar, (firefighters) Brian Davis, Josh and Candi Deemer and Shawn Glunt for their quick response,” he said. “They were at the fire hall the night that happened, and were down there in like less than a minute. They did a good job of going in and knocking it down and they actually saved the place.”
“They did a fantastic job,” Councilman Mike Kisan added.
