Rostraver Public Library will host its first-ever children’s chess tournament this weekend.
While millions compete annually in chess tournaments, library Executive Director Naomi Cross said the event is a first for the library.
“This tournament gives community members a chance to challenge themselves with friendly competition,” Cross said, adding that winners in each age bracket will advance to the Westmoreland County Library Chess Championship April 6 at Murrysville Community Library.
Cross said library board member Mark Seamans volunteered to host the chess tournament after learning the library did not participate previously due to lack of “someone knowledgeable enough to be able to run it.”
