When the clock strikes 2 a.m. tomorrow, it will be time to “spring forward” and turn the clocks ahead an hour for Daylight Saving Time.
Allegheny Emergency Services Chief Matthew J. Brown is reminding residents that a good time to check their household emergency preparedness is when Daylight Saving Time starts and ends each year.
It’s also an opportunity to install smoke, carbon monoxide, and natural gas detectors/alarms, as well as check existing alarm batteries, make and practice an escape plan, and build an emergency kit, Brown said.
Working alarms are particularly critical to keeping families safe.
Nearly 60 percent of home fire deaths occurred in properties with no smoke alarms or where smoke alarms failed to operate, and the risk of dying in a fire is 54 percent lower if there is a working smoke alarm in the home, according to Brown.
