Due to an ever-increasing problem of unwanted and stray animals, an Elizabeth Forward School District teacher has made it her mission to support local animal shelters and rescues.
Jessie Ruschak, a fourth-grade teacher at William Penn Elementary School, organized a school-wide fundraising effort about 15 years ago to assist shelters and purchase pet supplies.
“During the first two weeks of February, with the help of our secretary, Carol Hoover, staff and students, our school collects monetary donations and pet items, as well as pet supplies for those organizations,” Ruschak said.
This February’s school fundraising effort raised nearly $1,600. Through the years, shelters such as the Who Rescued Who Humane Society, Frankie’s Cat Rescue, White Oak Animal Safe Haven, Angel Ridge Rescue, Washington Area Humane Society, Action for Animals Humane Society, Back Street Cat Rescue, South Hills Pet Rescue and Animal Friends have benefited from the project.
