Donora police have new contract

Donora borough council approved a three-year contract with its police union Thursday night.
Donora police officers have been working without a contract for more than a year. The new deal runs through the end of 2020. The contract is retroactive to Jan. 1, 2018 and officers will receive back pay.
One issue that led council to stop negotiating last summer and choose to enter arbitration was a Deferred Retirement Option Plan, or DROP pension.
A DROP pension enables officers who are retirement age to begin drawing benefits from their pensions and continue working for a specific number of years. The amount drawn from the pension is put into a separate account and given to the officer in a lump sum upon retirement. Once the term is up, the officer must retire.
