There are several hotly contested races in Westmoreland County as the May 21 primary draws near.
Nine people are running for two, four-year seats on the county board of commissioners, including incumbent Democrats Gina Cerilli and Ted Kopas. The challengers are Republicans Douglas Chew, Patricia Fritz, Ron Gazze, Sean Kertes, Paul Kosko, John Ventre and Heather Wersing Cordial.
Four people are challenging embattled Republican Sheriff Jonathan Held in his bid for re-election. Opponents include Democrat James Albert and Republicans Steve Felder, Samuel Pilato and Eugene Zulisky.
Democrat Mark Mears and Republican Jeffrey Balzer will likely square off in November as the only two seeking their party’s nomination for the role of county controller.
