A group of 11 “Angels” who have created their own community at The Oaks Retirement Residence in White Oak say making hats for babies and cancer and dialysis patients at local hospitals “makes our days brighter.”
Since 2015, the group, which is known around the Mon Valley as “The Angels of The Oaks,” has made more than 5,000 yarn tossle caps and pieces of headwear for patients and newborn and premature babies at UPMC McKeesport, UPMC’s Hillman Cancer Center, Allegheny Health Network’s Forbes and Jefferson hospitals.
The group, also known as “the hat ladies” and “the mad hatters,” also makes hats for patients at area dialysis treatment centers and for people who are dealing with homelessness and seeking shelter at the McKeesport branch of the Salvation Army.
The “Angels” are Nancy Kinneavy, Lousie Naugle, Dorothy Kaler, Val Delle Donne, Irene Ramski, Kay Andrews, Linda Swab, Toni Knoll, Ruth Kovac, Joyce Lebowitz and Sandy Churik.
