Eleven students from McKeesport Area High School filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the school district Wednesday.
The students claim the district denied them permission to form a club called the “McKeesport Black Student Union.”
The students are represented by the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania, which had vowed legal action if a black student union wasn’t in place by April 5.
Students Rasona Webb, Grace Walker, Andre Robinson and Stephanie Williams-Murray, who call themselves the MBSU founding committee, drafted a charter, emailed it to Superintendent Dr. Mark Holtzman Jr. in February and asked him to present it to the board. The ACLU provided a copy of the charter proposal, which has never been included on an official school board agenda and has not been voted on by the board.
