“My mom needs a kidney!”
That simple message has attracted major attention for one Monongahela family.
Since being diagnosed with stage five chronic kidney disease almost 10 years ago, Ringgold High School history teacher Mary Jo Michalowski, 61, has become a “patient soul.”
“I thought I was just exhausted, so it blew me away. I consider myself a strong person, but when the doctor left the room after telling me my diagnosis, I was crying like a baby,” Mary Jo said. “I thought, ‘Why me? How can I do this?’ — but 10 years later, I’m still doing it.”
Despite being in complete kidney failure, Mary Jo did not let her health slow her down. A mother of five, she continues to teach full time while undergoing dialysis three days a week.
