An audit of Monessen’s finances detailing its $7.2 million debt has been made public, but the city’s solicitor said its release is “premature.”
The Mon Valley Independent received a copy of the 2018 audit, which was completed by Cypher & Cypher of Canonsburg and subsequently submitted to the state Department of Community and Economic Development March 26. According to the documents, the financial report’s status with the state is still “pending.”
Auditors are not slated to present their findings to city council before June, and the full report will not be available online until later this year. DCED’s website, www.dced.pa.gov, currently lists Monessen financial reports through Dec. 31, 2017.
A letter from Cypher & Cypher to city officials accompanied the audit report, detailing the responsibilities of both the city and auditors, pending its final approval.
