The City of Monongahela will apply for a Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program grant that would fund improvements at Hillcrest and Mounds parks.
The program is administered by the state Department of Community and Economic Development. Monongahela will ask for $113,000 for the project.
The city will contribute $20,000 — $12,500 of which was donated by the Turners club that closed in the city years ago. It was donated for recreational purposes and has been set aside for such a project.
Another $1,500 of the city’s funding comes from a donation from Monongahela Donora Area Lions Club, Councilman Rusty Polonoli said after council’s meeting Wednesday.
If the city gets the grant, the project will include new playground equipment at the Mounds. The new equipment plus installation is expected to cost about $38,000.
New pavilions will be built at Hillcrest and the Mounds.
