Cruisin’ the boulevard: ‘American Graffiti’ cruise nights coming to Monongahela

Friday nights in downtown Monongahela are about to get a lot cooler with the start of “American Graffiti” style car cruises.
Initiated by the Bona Fide Car Club and the Monongahela Area Chamber of Commerce, the Friday night car cruises are modeled after a decades-old and time-honored tradition of a parade-style procession of motorists quite literally “cruising” a strip of roadway to showcase their vehicles to other drivers as well as onlookers.
“Unlike most car show events, Bona Fide Car Club’s primary focus is to showcase vehicles by driving, instead of just walking around looking at them. This is not a tailgating event,” said Ken Kennedy, the club’s vice president.
The event will begin at 6 p.m. every Friday through Aug. 30, rain or shine, and is open to anyone willing to show off a vehicle. A booth will be set up for participants to check in, where they will receive a discount card for local businesses, that are redeemable anytime. The cards will be hole-punched every time a driver completes a cruise.
Drivers will circle through Monongahela, starting behind the Eat ’N Park lot on Chess Street, and continuing through town along Main Street, until they reach the intersection of Route 837, near Lenzi’s restaurant.
