Yough’s defensive prowess was on display Wednesday in a 7-0 victory over Central Valley in the first round of the Class 4A WPIAL softball playoffs.
Senior Kierra Waywood pitched a four-hit shutout with a little help from her friends, including some sharp plays by shortstop Kaylyn Odelli, first baseman Corrin Parquette and a snag by right fielder Katelyn Chilzer.
“All in all, when the time came to make plays, we made plays and I was happy about that,” said Yough head coach Dutch Harvey.
Yough, the fifth seed in Class 4A, scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the first. Waywood, the leadoff batter, was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a sacrifice by Odelli. Hannah Christner drove Waywood home with a line drive to center field to make it 1-0.
