Water pollution fears spark injunction

Two county district attorneys are trying to prevent a local municipal authority from terminating its contract with a Westmoreland County landfill that accepts fracking waste.
The Municipal Authority of Belle Vernon accepts and treats wastewater that comes from the Westmoreland Sanitary Landfill, also known as the Tervita Rostraver Sanitary Landfill, via pipeline.
On Wednesday, the municipal authority board voted to terminate the contract and no longer accept leachate from the landfill because testing revealed that it contained chemicals known to be carcinogens, according to a statement from Washington County District Attorney Eugene Vittone.
The board had been advised by legal counsel that continued acceptance of discharges from the landfill would subject the municipal authority to liability.
