Local wrestling coaches react to weight class reduction
By Dan Palm
For the MV Independent
The PIAA Board of Control passed its wrestling committee’s proposal last week to drop the number of weight classes from 14 to 12 beginning in the 2020-2021 season.
The PIAA will send the proposal to the National Federation of State High School Associations to see if they will consider the change nationwide.
If the NFHS says no, the PIAA will petition to be allowed to use the new weight classes as a pilot program.
The 12 new weight classes would be: 110, 118, 125, 132, 138, 145, 152, 160, 170, 190, 215 and 285 pounds.
