The White Oak Vet Center parking lot was a sea of barbecue sauce-covered faces over Memorial Day weekend.
In memory of America’s heroes, the center, which is part of the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, teamed up with Big Frank’s B-B-Q of Mc-Keesport to host the second annual White Oak Vet Center Open House Barbecue.
Veterans were invited to bring their families, eat some barbecued favorites like ribs and chicken and learn what the White Oak Vet Center has to offer.
Celebrating 40 years of “keeping the promise,” vet centers were established by Congress in 1979 in recognition that a significant number of Vietnam-era veterans were not accessing VA services at the same levels as Korean and World War II veterans, according to White Oak Vet Center Director Nancy Mizack.
