World War II “giant” Staff Sgt. Felix J. Lisovich received a long overdue honor Tuesday morning.
Sitting in the first row of a meeting area inside the American Legion in North Belle Vernon, the 96-year-old World War II combat medic from Washington Township was surrounded by family, friends, elected officials and veterans as U.S. Rep. Guy Reschenthaler, Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Gragg, U.S. Army Medical Command and Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army Dr. Rory Cooper, sang his accolades and congratulated him for a job well done.
Gragg was contacted by Cpl. Brian Bender, whom Lisovich used to drive to and from kindergarten, about honoring his hometown hero.
Bender sent Lisovich’s 32-page memoir to Gragg and he was hooked.
“It was 32 pages of reading that you could not put down,” Gragg said. “I read it several times and as I was reading I felt a sense of connection to you.”
