The City of McKeesport Recreation Board held its annual fishing derby Saturday, with all the kids enrolled paying 50 cents to be able to cast their rods in hopes of catching the biggest carp, sunfish, catfish or trout at Renziehausen Park’s Lake Emilie.
Prizes were awarded to the boy and girl who caught the largest fish.
Twelve-year-old Caiden Howard Smith won the boys division by snagging a 35-inch carp. It was the largest catch of the day.
Recreation board member Cheryl Cotter, who organized the event along with board member Keith Soles, City Administrator Tom Maglicco and mayor’s assistant Jennifer Vertullo, said the carp was one of the biggest fish she has ever seen caught in the lake, adding that she has been spending time fishing at the lake since she was a small child.
Smith was all smiles about catching the carp.
“I’m proud of myself,” he said. “It is the biggest fish I ever caught and it really put up a tough fight.”
