Monessen police received several reports of a black bear in the city on Saturday.
Chief Jim Smith said the calls started coming in around noon from residents who spotted a young black bear in the areas of Knox and Reed avenues.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission was called to investigate, but was not able to find the animal.
Smith said it’s normal to see young black bears in the city this time of year because they are being run out of their territory by their mothers.
“They pass through residential areas trying to find their next home,” Smith said. “This is definitely not the first bear we have seen in town.”
