A Ringgold High School soccer player who graduated last week was one of two teens killed by a lightning strike Thursday in Westmoreland County’s Mammoth Park.
Kaitlyn “Moe” Rosensteel, 18, of Donora and Brendan McGowan, 18, of North Huntingdon died Thursday when a tree they were sitting near was struck by lightning about 4 p.m. They were fishing from a small island on Mammoth Park lake.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud crack and observing a large flash of light in the area at the time of the strike, and seeing the pair beneath a large splintered tree.
According to Westmoreland County Coroner Kenneth Bacha, both teens were pronounced dead shortly after 5 p.m. The investigation involved county park police and county detectives.
