Monessen School Board agreed to take another look at a budget that would raise taxes in response to requests from several residents Tuesday night.
The board voted down a $16.14 million budget for 2019-20 that would have increased Monessen real estate taxes by 2.66 mills.
At the beginning of the meeting, several residents voiced their concerns over the proposed increase in spending and the quality of education offered at Monessen schools.
Resident Doreen Smith said she understands there are uncontrollable costs involved in a school district budget, such as cyber school expenses and pensions, but added that the district can control costs in other areas.
“I’m requesting the budget be tabled and things be looked at again and justified to the citizens of Monessen, so we can have an understanding that you’re looking at everything,” Smith said.
