Competitors dressed as “flower children” and spent the day reminiscing about the Age of Aquarius during Tuesday’s Senior Games.
The event, held on the campus of Carmichaels Junior Senior High School, adopted the theme of “Peace, Love and Games” to mark the 50th anniversary of Woodstock.
The games are presented each year by SPHS, the Southwestern Pennsylvania Area Agency on Aging and Blueprints. The athletes regularly participate in activities at senior centers in Washington, Fayette and Greene counties.
Nearly 700 seniors attended this year, which Southwestern Pennsylvania Area Agency on Aging executive director Leslie Grenfell said is the highest turnout the games have ever seen.
Those seniors participated in athletic events such as basketball, football and softball tosses, bocce, bean bag toss, horseshoes, shuffleboard, riding a stationary bike, 50-yard dash and a 1-mile walk. There was also a putting contest and “super bingo.”
In down time between the events, the seniors got to walk around the school’s campus and view slideshows, photographs and videos of historic events from the 1960s such the Vietnam War, Woodstock and the first moon landing.
