The Summer Food Service Program officially kicked off this week, and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank has announced several locations to get free meals in the Mon Valley.
The federal program provides free meals and fun activities for people age 18 and younger while school is out of session.
It used to be commonly known as the “Summer Lunch Program,” but the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the United Way have stopped calling it that because the program now offers free breakfast and dinner at some locations.
The outreach initiative is an aggressive campaign to increase participation in summer child hunger programs by collaborating with local organizations that agree to serve kids during the summer.
