Some of Cecelia Sciortino’s favorite childhood memories took place in the kitchen, so she didn’t mind spending her 100th birthday there.
The Charleroi resident reached that milestone last month and received plenty of help as she worked to prepare a celebration meal for about 175 people.
Born Cecilia Lombardi Pennline on May 28, 1919, Sciortino has lived her entire life in Charleroi. Her parents, Henry and Pauline, settled in the Mon Valley after immigrating from Statigliano, a small town near Naples, Italy. Henry found work at the Corning plant and they settled down to raise a family.
Cecilia was the youngest of four girls in the family of eight children.
“We were poor but that didn’t matter,” she said. “We had plenty to eat and we had the family.”
