McKeesport Mayor Michael Cherepko joined four community organizations and several teenagers Thursday to talk about ways to reduce gun violence in the city.
McKeesport Gun Violence Project meetings were held at Auberle, the LaRosa Boys and Girls Club, YouthPlaces at Crawford Village and the Healthy Village Learning Institute.
The organizers of the project, which is a “multi-part model” and is funded by a $150,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, also want to learn about the concerns of the city’s young people.
The mayor’s office has hired educator and long-time McKeesport resident Keith Murphy, director of the McKeesport-based HVLI, to be a youth development and engagement consultant.
Located on Freemont Street, HVLI offers arts, cultural, educational, health and wellness activities for ages 8 to 21 and uses social programs to address the “risk domains” of the individual, family, school, peers, community and technology.
