A former long-time Charleroi resident died Thursday after contracting a flesh-eating disease while swimming in a Florida ocean, family members say.
Carolyn “Lynn” Fleming, 77, had three surgeries to try to stave off the infection. It was brought on by swimming in the ocean on the Gulf Coast, not far from her Ellenton, Fla., home, which she retired to around four years ago.
Daughter-in-law Traci Fleming of Charleroi said her family was visiting Lynn in Florida last week on vacation when her mother-in-law fell into the ocean and suffered a small cut on her leg.
“Within two to six hours, you can go from a little cut to an entirely black leg,” Traci said. “But it looked fine, and we didn’t know it would be a problem and we left the beach. It wasn’t a huge cut at all.”
