McKeesport will hire extra officer for school police force

McKeesport Area School Board made a slight change to its plans for a district-run police force last week.
The board voted in May to create a police chief position and one police officer position for the McKeesport Area School District Police Department, which is scheduled to be operational by the start of the upcoming school year.
The chief’s annual salary was set at $55,000 and the officer’s salary was set at $50,000. That changed last week when the board voted to alter the language in the original action and will now hire two full-time officers instead of one. Both officers will be paid $25 per hour. No changes were made to the chief’s salary.
Director David Donato voted against the measure after asking a series of questions about what the role of the district-run police force would be. He wanted to know if job descriptions for each position have been finalized.
