Liberty Borough native Jim Chester isn’t shy about talking about the blue-collar, hard-working nature of Southwestern Pennsylvania.
If it wasn’t for the work ethic instilled in him by his parents, family and region, he wouldn’t be where he is.
Chester, a 1998 graduate of Serra Catholic High School, was hired June 14 to guide the baseball program at Division I Gardner Webb. He officially started Monday.
It’s Chester’s fifth head coaching job.
“It’s kind of surreal and I still don’t think its hit me yet,” Chester said. “I just got done talking to Chris Pollard at Duke and Mark Kingston at (South Carolina) to finalize schedules.
“It’s just surreal to think that six years ago I had a team practicing in a parking lot at Penn State-Greater Allegheny.”
